One of the BEST Neighbor Days of the Year!
How is it that we can claim October 31st is one of the best neighbor days of the year?
Because this is the one day when nearly every neighbor comes right to your door! Everyone’s ready to chat, ready to smile, and ready to connect. So—let the fun begin!
Today is a wonderful opportunity to bring glory to God. How? By letting your light shine!
Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” — John 8:12
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” — John 1:5
Jesus not only declares Himself the Light of the world—He calls us to be lights too.
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. People don’t light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 5:14–16
So don’t hide your light or shut your door this Halloween. And please, resist the urge to post a sign saying, “We are Christians and don’t celebrate evil.”
Paul reminds us,
“Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.” — Romans 12:21
This is the perfect time to shine brightly and push back the darkness with light.
Practical Ways to Shine
What if this year, we all turned up our lights—literally and spiritually—and became a light to our neighbors?
Here are a few simple ways to do that:
- Light it up: Turn on your porch lights and make your home warm and welcoming. String up white Christmas lights or place luminaries along your walkway.
- Be generous: Hand out the best candy—yes, chocolate counts! Or have you ever given out doughnuts? It is a very fun treat. If you share a good-news tract, include candy with it.
- Pray: As you prepare, pray for your neighbors. Walk or drive around your neighborhood, asking God to open doors for connection and blessing.
- Offer hospitality: Have drinks ready—cold water or hot chocolate, depending on the weather.
- Be present: Greet visitors with a smile. Play joyful music. Sit outside so people know you’re glad they came.
- Be friendly: Compliment costumes, ask names, and get to know your neighbors.
- Include everyone: Have dog treats for furry visitors too!
- Partner with others: If you don’t get trick-or-treaters where you live, team up with a friend who does. Bring candy, help greet, and share God’s love there.
Let this be the year we go out and be the light—brightly, joyfully, and generously.
